This is the question every Gel-X client lands on a few weeks in, and salons do not always explain it clearly. The short version: if your tips are still solid and only the base has grown out, you get a fill. If tips have lifted or you want a change, you get a new set. Knowing the difference saves you time and money.
What a Gel-X fill is
As your nails grow, a gap opens between your cuticle and where the Gel-X tip starts, and the balance of the nail shifts forward. A fill addresses exactly that. We gently tidy the grown out area, refresh the gel at the base so the surface is smooth and even again, rebalance the shape, and re apply color or art. Your existing tips stay on. It is the routine, lower effort visit that keeps a set looking new.
What a new set is
A new set starts from scratch. We soak off the old tips in acetone, prep the natural nail, and apply fresh Gel-X tips, then shape, color and finish. It takes longer than a fill and uses more product, but it resets everything: a clean surface, fresh tips, and the chance to change your length, shape or whole look.
How to tell which you need
Choose a fill when the tips are still well bonded, nothing has lifted or cracked, and you are happy with the length and shape. Choose a new set when one or more tips have lifted at the edge, a tip has cracked or chipped, you have gone too long between visits and there is heavy grow out, or you simply want a new length, shape or style. When you come in, we will look honestly and tell you which makes sense. We are not going to talk you into a full new set when a fill will do.
If a tip has started to lift, do not wait and do not pick it. A timely fill or new set protects the natural nail underneath.
How often and how much
Most clients come in every two to three weeks, which lines up with how fast the base grows out. A fill generally takes less chair time and less product than a new set, so it usually costs less, though the exact price depends on length, art and condition. We confirm it before we begin, so there are no surprises. See the full menu on our pricing page.
Daily cuticle oil and gloves for cleaning slow lifting and stretch the time between visits, so you get more out of every fill. Our guide on making gel last longer applies to Gel-X too.
How many fills before a new set?
There is no fixed rule. Some people fill a couple of times and then refresh; others prefer a new set each visit so they can change colors and shapes. Over time, even a well maintained set benefits from a clean reset, and we will let you know when that point arrives rather than stretching it past where it looks its best. New to Gel-X entirely? FAQ
Can Gel-X be filled?+
Yes. When the tips are still well bonded and only the base has grown out, we can do a Gel-X fill: tidy the grown out area, rebalance the shape and refresh the color, without removing the whole set.
What is the difference between a fill and a new set?+
A fill keeps your existing tips and refreshes the grown out base. A new set removes everything and applies fresh tips. A fill is faster and gentler when the set is sound; a new set is better when tips have lifted, cracked, or you want a new length or shape.
How often do you need a Gel-X fill?+
Most people come in every two to three weeks, when the base has grown out enough to show. It depends on how fast your nails grow and how hard you are on your hands.
Is a fill cheaper than a new set?+
Usually a fill takes less time and product than a full new set. We confirm the price before we begin.
How many times can you fill Gel-X?+
There is no hard limit, but most people get a fresh set after a couple of fills, or sooner if tips have lifted or they want a new look. We will tell you honestly when a new set is the better call.
