Clients ask for "the strongest nails" all the time, but strength is only one part of a good set. A beautiful manicure should also feel comfortable, protect the natural nail, suit your daily life and come off without damage. At X Nails in Sherman Oaks, Gel-X is one of our specialties, but we still talk through acrylic and dip powder when those choices make more sense.
Here is the honest salon answer: no product is best for everyone. Gel-X, acrylic and dip powder can all be worn safely when the prep is gentle, the product is applied cleanly and removal is not rushed. The wrong service, or the right service removed badly, can leave nails thin and sore.
What Gel-X is best for
Gel-X uses full coverage soft gel tips that are cured onto the natural nail with gel. The shape and length are built into the tip, so the finished set can look smooth and balanced without a bulky build. Clients love Gel-X because it feels light, photographs beautifully and gives length in one appointment.
Gel-X is a strong choice if you want almond, coffin, square or soft tapered shapes without waiting for your nails to grow. It is also great for nail art because the surface is clean and even. At X Nails, Gel-X starts around $60 and varies with length, shape and design.
The tradeoff is maintenance. Gel-X is usually worn for two to three weeks, then removed and replaced. Some clients can stretch it longer, but I do not recommend wearing lifted extensions. Water can get under lifted areas, and the natural nail can weaken if you start picking.
What acrylic is best for
Acrylic is a liquid and powder system that hardens into a durable enhancement. It has been used in salons for decades because it can create major length, repair breaks and hold up well for clients who are tough on their hands. Acrylic can also be filled, which means you do not always need a full removal at each visit.
If you want very long nails, dramatic shapes or maximum structure, acrylic may be the better option. It is less flexible than Gel-X and can handle more stress when applied with good architecture. The key word is good. Thick acrylic that is poorly balanced can feel heavy and put pressure on the natural nail.
Acrylic has a stronger odor during service and needs careful filing. A technician should refine the product, not grind your natural nail. If your nails already feel thin or hot during filing, speak up. Discomfort is not part of a proper service.
What dip powder is best for
Dip powder is usually used over natural nails, though it can be combined with tips. It is popular because it feels firm, wears well and does not require a lamp for the color layers. Dip is a good option for clients who want more durability than regular gel polish but do not want long extensions.
Dip powder at X Nails starts around $45. It can be a smart choice if your natural nails have some length and you want a clean color that lasts. It is not my first choice for every nail type, especially if the nails are very flexible or peeling, because removal still matters. Product that is forced off can damage the top layers of the nail.
How they compare for wear
For most clients, Gel-X and dip last about two to three weeks. Acrylic can often go longer between full removals because it can be filled, but that does not mean you should ignore lifting or imbalance. The longer an enhancement grows out, the more stress moves toward the tip of the nail.
If you type, cook, clean and use your hands all day, choose a practical length. A short Gel-X almond may last better than a long coffin set. A neat dip overlay may outlast long natural nails that bend. Shape matters too. Our nail shapes guide explains why square corners can catch and why almond can feel easier for some hands.
How they compare for removal
Removal is where many nails get damaged. Gel-X and dip are generally soaked off with acetone after the top layer is filed. Acrylic can also be soaked, though it may take longer. None of these products should be peeled, popped or ripped away from the nail.
If you are choosing a service, be honest about whether you will return for removal. If you know you pick at grown out nails, choose a shorter schedule or a lower commitment service like a gel manicure. You can also read our safe removal guide for emergencies, but salon removal is always the cleaner choice.
What I recommend by lifestyle
- For instant length and a light feel: choose Gel-X.
- For very long nails or hard wear: consider acrylic.
- For natural nails with extra strength: choose dip powder.
- For low commitment shine: choose a $40 gel manicure, with French for an extra $10.
Price should not be the only reason you choose a service. A cheaper set that damages your nails costs more in the long run. The best appointment starts with a quick look at your natural nails, then a recommendation that matches what your hands can actually maintain. FAQ
Is Gel-X better than acrylic?+
Gel-X is lighter and often easier to soak off, while acrylic is very strong and can be filled. The better choice depends on your nail condition, length goal and maintenance habits.
Is dip powder healthier than gel?+
No nail enhancement is automatically healthier. Dip can be durable, but the health of the nail depends on sanitation, prep, removal and whether product is picked off.
Which lasts longer, Gel-X, acrylic or dip?+
Acrylic often lasts longest for very hard wear. Gel-X and dip commonly last two to three weeks when applied and cared for properly.
Can Gel-X be filled?+
Some salons rebalance Gel-X, but many technicians prefer removal and a fresh set because the full coverage tip is designed as a complete overlay.
Which service is best for thin nails?+
Thin nails need gentle prep and careful removal first. A short Gel-X set, structured gel or dip may work, but the best choice should be made after seeing the nails in person.
