Polygel vs Gel-X nails

Polygel and Gel-X are two of the most popular ways to add length without acrylic, and people often mix them up. They are different systems with different strengths. Here is how they actually compare, and how to pick the right one for your nails.

Both polygel and Gel-X are gel based and cured under a lamp, and both are lighter than traditional acrylic. The difference is in how length is built.

How each one works

Polygel is a thick, putty like gel that is scooped out and shaped onto the nail, often using a dual form, then cured. Because it is sculpted by hand, a skilled tech can build very custom shapes and thickness. Gel-X uses a pre shaped, full coverage soft gel tip that is bonded over your entire natural nail and cured, so the strength is spread across the whole nail. Gel-X tends to be faster and more consistent set to set, with a very thin, natural finish.

Strength, feel and removal

Polygel is strong and a little more flexible, good for those who want to sculpt a specific shape. Gel-X is light and natural feeling, which is why first timers are often surprised by how little they notice it. Both remove far more gently than acrylic: Gel-X soaks off in acetone, and polygel is usually buffed thin then soaked. With either, the golden rule is never to peel a lifted edge.

Which should you choose?

If you want the most natural, lightweight set with a clean, reliable finish, Gel-X is hard to beat, and it is our specialty. If you want heavy custom sculpting or extra length on naturally strong nails, polygel is worth a conversation. Still deciding between systems overall? FAQ

What is the difference between polygel and Gel-X?+

Polygel is a putty like product shaped onto your nail or in a dual form and cured. Gel-X uses a pre shaped, full coverage soft gel tip that is bonded over the whole nail. Gel-X is faster and more consistent, while polygel offers more custom sculpting.

Is polygel or Gel-X better for nail health?+

Both are gentler than acrylic and soak or buff off without heavy drilling when done correctly. Gel-X is very light and natural feeling. The bigger factor for nail health is the skill of your tech and a careful removal, not the system itself.

Which lasts longer, polygel or Gel-X?+

Both typically last two to three weeks before a fill or new set. Wear time depends more on your nail growth and daily habits than on the product.

Which is cheaper, polygel or Gel-X?+

Pricing is similar and depends on the salon, length and art. At X Nails, Gel-X starts at $60. We specialize in Gel-X for its clean, natural finish.
