Nails break at the worst times: a snagged tip, a crack across a free edge, a lifted extension the day before a wedding. The instinct to peel or pull it off is the one thing you should not do, because that takes layers of the natural nail with it. Bring it to us instead.
What actually counts as a nail repair?
"Repair" covers a few different problems, and the right fix depends on which one you have:
- A broken natural nail, a crack, split or tear in your own nail plate, with or without polish on it. We assess the depth of the break, file and smooth the edge, and reinforce it if needed so it doesn't catch and tear further.
- A lifted or cracked Gel-X tip, the soft-gel extension has lifted from the natural nail plate near the cuticle, or the tip itself has cracked. We remove just that tip, reprep the nail, and bond a fresh one so it matches the rest of the set. If you have pain, bleeding, or signs of infection, see a doctor rather than a salon.
- A cracked gel or acrylic nail, the polish or overlay has chipped or split but the tip underneath is still bonded. Often a quick patch and reseal, without pulling the whole nail.
- A snagged or uneven edge, not broken, just rough enough to catch on things. A quick file and buff usually solves it.
Is it fixable, or do you need a new set?
One nail down is almost always a repair, not a redo, we fix that single nail so it blends back in with the rest. But if two or more nails have lifted, or your whole set has grown out unevenly and several tips are loose, patch-repairing each one individually usually isn't the better move. We assess each nail on your set, lifted product often needs to be removed before we can rebuild rather than simply filling over it, so a fill (addressing the regrowth at the cuticle across the set) or a full new set is often the better and longer lasting choice. Aftercare to prevent the next break
Most repeat breaks come from the same handful of habits: using nails to open cans or peel labels, skipping cuticle oil so the nail dries out and gets brittle, or catching a lifted edge on fabric instead of coming in to have it looked at. Daily cuticle oil keeps both natural nails and Gel-X tips more flexible and less prone to cracking, and wearing gloves for dishes and cleaning protects the bond at the cuticle. If an edge starts lifting, get it looked at early, a small lift caught fast is a quick fix; the same lift left for a week often turns into a bigger repair.

Repairing a Gel-X tip vs. a natural nail
The two repairs look similar but aren't identical. A broken natural nail is your own nail plate, so we're careful not to over-file it, we smooth the break, protect the free edge, and let it grow out cleanly rather than aggressively shaping it down. A lifted or cracked Gel-X tip is an extension bonded to your nail, so the repair is about removing that one tip cleanly (without disturbing the natural nail underneath), re-prepping, and bonding a fresh tip that's sized and blended to match the rest of the set.
